The Backbone of the Army Cadet Program: Honouring Our Support Committee Volunteers
By: Paul Preikschas, Executive Director – The Army Cadet League of Canada (Ontario)
Across 111 communities in Ontario, the Army Cadet Program thrives thanks to a dedicated network of volunteers whose commitment and care are woven into the fabric of every cadet unit. These unsung heroes—members of the Army Cadet League of Canada (Ontario) Support Committees—make it possible for over a hundred Army Cadet Corps to operate, grow, and succeed. Simply put, without them, there would be no program.
Support Committee volunteers are the backbone of the Army Cadet Program in Ontario. They work quietly behind the scenes, but their impact is profound and far-reaching. From organizing fundraising efforts and managing finances, to securing facilities, arranging transportation, and ensuring cadets have access to uniforms and equipment, these volunteers handle the essential tasks that keep cadet corps functioning day to day.
The Army Cadet Program offers youth aged 12 to 18 an opportunity to develop leadership skills, citizenship, physical fitness, and a sense of service to Canada—all at no cost to families. But this affordability and accessibility are only possible because of the tireless work of local Support Committees. These volunteers coordinate with local communities, parents, sponsors, and the Canadian Armed Forces to bridge the gap between resources and needs.
In every corner of Ontario—from small towns to major cities—Support Committee volunteers are embedded in the lives of cadets, helping them access life-changing experiences. Whether it’s organizing a community parade, supporting field training exercises, or making sure snacks are available at weekly meetings, their presence ensures a safe, enriching, and fun environment for youth to grow and thrive.
Their work isn’t glamorous, and it often goes unrecognized. But ask any cadet, parent, or Commanding Officer, and they will tell you: the success of their local Army Cadet Corps would not be possible without the dedication of these volunteers.
As we continue to build strong youth leaders for tomorrow, let’s take a moment to honour the passionate individuals who make it all possible today. To all the Support Committee volunteers with the Army Cadet League of Canada (Ontario): thank you. You are not just helping cadets—you are shaping the future of our communities.
